How do I honour everyone's needs, including my own?

Non-monogamy offers freedom and connection in beautiful ways, but it also means navigating complex emotions, balancing time and energy, and maintaining trust across multiple relationships.

Even with love and intention, challenges can arise: shifting dynamics, unexpected triggers, misaligned boundaries, or the weight of societal judgment. It’s easy to feel stretched thin or unsure how to meet everyone’s needs without sacrificing your own.

Therapy can help you create relationships that are ethical, intentional, and deeply fulfilling for everyone involved.

When love is abundant, but balance feels out of reach

Polyamory and open relationships are built on freedom, honesty, and deep care. But managing multiple connections, along with jealousy, communication challenges, and outside judgment, can take a toll.

You might find yourself caught between meeting partners’ needs, keeping up with life demands, and trying to protect your own energy and emotional health. Even in the most loving relationships, balance can feel elusive.

Therapy provides a space to untangle these challenges, clarify what you need, and strengthen your relationships so they feel both expansive and sustainable.

What can counselling for non-monogamous & polyamorous relationships help with?

Managing multiple relationships often means navigating complex logistics, emotions, and conversations. We use tools from the Gottman Method and Imago Relationship Therapy to help you speak your truth clearly, listen with empathy, and reduce misunderstandings across all partners.

Emotional safety is essential in any relationship, especially in non-monogamy where trust can be tested in unique ways. Through Emotion-Focused Couples Therapy (EFCT), adapted for all relationship structures, we explore how trust is built, repaired, and sustained.

Jealousy is not proof that non-monogamy does not work. It is a signal to explore what is underneath. Together, we will identify the root of those emotions and develop healthier ways to respond.
It’s easy for intimacy to get lost when schedules are packed, emotions are high, or your energy is stretched thin. Counselling for polyamorous relationships creates space to check in with your sexual, emotional, and physical needs, and reignite connection in ways that feel good for everyone involved.
Boundaries are important, not to control others, but to honour yourself and your capacity. We help you get clear on what you need to feel safe and respected, and support you in communicating those boundaries with kindness and clarity.
Tension between metamours can ripple through the whole polycule. We can help reduce friction and improve understanding, even if closeness is not the goal.
Big changes like moving, career shifts, or adding a new partner can destabilize even the most secure relationships. We will help you navigate transitions without losing your footing.
Sometimes a relationship needs to change shape or end. We will support you in making those decisions with honesty, compassion, and care.

Discernment Counselling At Mindful Path

There’s an in-between place that can show up in any relationship, whether you’re in a dyad, a polycule, or another configuration of consensual non-monogamy. You still care deeply, but you’re not sure you can keep going as you are. One of you is leaning toward ending things; the other is hoping to stay and work it out. Traditional relationship therapy often isn’t the right fit for that moment, because you haven’t yet decided if therapy is what you want.

Discernment counselling, developed by Dr. Bill Doherty at the University of Minnesota, is a short-term process (usually 1 to 5 sessions) designed for exactly this crossroads. The goal isn’t to fix the relationship right away. It’s to help each of you gain clarity and confidence about what comes next. Sessions include time together and one-on-one time with each partner, and by the end you’ll have a clearer sense of which path feels right: staying as you are, choosing to separate with honesty and care, or committing to a focused period of relationship therapy with the intention of rebuilding.

Discernment Counselling at Mindful Path is offered by Deborah Rimay, MSW, RSW.

Questions About Counselling for Non-Monogamous & Polyamorous Relationships

Totally valid question. If you’ve been wondering whether non-monogamy or polyamory can actually work long-term, you’re not on your own. The answer is yes, it can be a healthy, fulfilling, and deeply meaningful way to love. Like any relationship structure, it just takes intention, communication, and care. In therapy, we support you in making your version of non-monogamy work in a way that feels good for everyone involved, including you.

These emotions are completely normal, and they don’t mean you’re bad at polyamory. Jealousy, fear of being left out, or insecurity can pop up even in the most loving relationships. In counselling for polyamorous relationships, we help you explore where those feelings are coming from and build tools to respond with self-awareness and compassion, instead of spiraling or shutting down.

When you’re navigating multiple relationships, communication isn’t just important, it’s everything. But that doesn’t mean it always comes naturally. Maybe you struggle to say what you need without feeling guilty, or you shut down during conflict, or over-explain to keep the peace. Trying to keep everyone in the loop while also managing your own emotions can feel like a full-time job.

And if you’ve been through past relationship trauma, or you live with anxiety or people-pleasing tendencies, honest communication can feel even harder. You might second-guess yourself, avoid tough conversations, or worry constantly about hurting someone.

In counselling for polyamorous relationships, we help you unpack what’s getting in the way of sharing your thoughts, feelings, and needs in a way that feels clear, grounded, and true to you.

Boundaries can be tricky, especially when you want to be open and generous in your relationships. But clear boundaries are what keep things healthy, sustainable, and respectful. We’ll help you figure out what’s okay (and what’s not), and how to communicate those boundaries in a way that honours everyone involved.

Finding a community that’s supportive of your relationship structure can be difficult in a society that holds a stigma around it. Whether it’s fear of being outed, navigating family conversations, or just dealing with the weight of being misunderstood, we create space to unpack that. Therapy can help you build resilience, find your voice, and feel less alone in it all.
