Something feels off, and you're ready to know why.
You’ve spent years wondering if this is just how life is supposed to feel. You feel chaotic, overwhelmed, and like you’re constantly swimming upstream while others seem to glide effortlessly by. It’s always seemed normal for you to lose focus mid-conversation, to feel your emotions rise unpredictably, or to watch your child struggle in ways that break your heart but don’t have clear explanations.
A Psychiatric Mental Health Assessment honours your unique journey and helps connect the dots, giving you clarity and a plan.
Why Get an ADHD or Psychiatric Mental Health Assessment?
Mental health isn’t like a broken bone; you can’t see it on an X-ray, but you know when something’s not working right. You might find yourself constantly distracted, emotionally overwhelmed, or watching your child struggle in ways that don’t seem to match their intelligence or effort. Even when everything looks fine on the surface, something inside keeps whispering that this isn’t how things should feel.
The frustrating part is that everyone has an opinion about what’s “wrong,” but nobody seems to have any real answers. A Psychiatric Mental Health Assessment cuts through all the noise and gets to the heart of what’s going on.
During an assessment, we help you gain a deeper understanding of your experiences, identify patterns that may have puzzled you for years, and find out if there’s a name for what you’ve been living with. With the right answers, you can finally stop guessing and begin getting the support that fits your life.

Our approach
How Psychiatric Mental Health Assessments Works
More than just a diagnosis, we offer a comprehensive understanding
- We begin with you
Your experiences matter. Every struggle, every pattern, every moment you’ve wondered, “Is this normal?” provides clues to help us understand your history, current symptoms, and how they’re showing up in your daily life today.
- We explore what's happening
Together, we’ll work through clinical interviews, standardized questionnaires, and any necessary testing to get a complete picture. We look for patterns, rule out medical causes, and determine if your experiences meet criteria for conditions like ADHD, anxiety, depression, or other mental health conditions. Everything we do is paced with your understanding in mind.
- We provide clarity and next steps
Our role is to give you the answers, diagnosis (if applicable), and treatment recommendations that allow you to move forward with confidence. Whether that’s medication, therapy referrals, or accessing supports like ODSP, you’ll have a clear path ahead.
We're here to support you through the entire process and beyond.

Questions About Psychiatric Mental Health Assessments
Do you offer ADHD assessments?
Can adults get an ADHD assessment?
Do I need a referral for an ADHD assessment?
Do I really need a psychiatric mental health assessment, or am I just overthinking?
If you’ve been told to “just relax” or that your child will “grow out of it,” but your everyday experience tells a different story, a psychiatric mental health assessment can bring real clarity. You know yourself, or your child, better than anyone, and noticing that something feels off is reason enough to seek support.
At its core, a Psychiatric Mental Health Assessment is about better understanding how your brain and nervous system are working so you can get the right kind of help. If symptoms are ongoing, confusing, or interfering with school, work, or relationships, an assessment can be a gentle and practical next step.
What can I expect during an assessment?
Think of a psychiatric mental health assessment as a thoughtful conversation spread over 1–4 appointments. We’ll talk about what’s been hard, what’s helping, and your history. You may fill out a few short questionnaires, and if we’re exploring ADHD, we might include simple attention or executive‑function activities.
Sessions are warm, collaborative, and move at your pace. It’s more like speaking with someone who genuinely wants to understand you than “taking a test.” For youth assessments, we include parents or caregivers where helpful.
Who can diagnose me, and how do I access them?
At Mindful Path Counselling, our Nurse Practitioner, Crystal Troup (NP‑PHC), can assess and diagnose concerns like ADHD/ADD, anxiety, depression, OCD, PTSD, and bipolar disorder. You can book directly, with no referral needed.
- Psychiatrists: Covered by OHIP with a doctor’s referral; waitlists can be long. Assessments often focus on diagnosis and medication.
- Psychologists: Provide comprehensive testing and written reports; typically private‑pay (sometimes covered by extended benefits).
We strive to keep psychiatric mental health assessments accessible and budget-friendly, and we’ll help you choose the path that best fits your needs.
Will a diagnosis help me, or just label me?
A diagnosis is a map, not a box. It gives language to what you’ve been experiencing and opens doors to meaningful support, whether that’s targeted therapies (e.g., CBT), medication (such as antidepressants when appropriate), school/work accommodations, or programs like ODSP.
You decide who you share it with. The results of an assessment are a tool that guides care and reduces self‑blame, not something that defines you.
What happens after the assessment?
You won’t be left to figure things out on your own. We’ll go over what we found in plain language and co‑create a plan that may include:
- Medication options (if appropriate) and coordination with your family doctor or psychiatrist
- Therapy with our team (e.g., CBT, EMDR, somatic, or skills‑based supports)
- Lifestyle strategies for sleep, focus, mood, and stress
- Referrals when specialized testing or services are needed
- Written reports for school, work, or programs like ODSP (upon request)
We’ll also talk about follow‑ups so you feel supported as you move forward.
Is there anything I need to do to prepare?
No cramming required, just come as you are. Helpful extras (if you have them):
- Any past reports or school notes, and a list of current medications
- A few real‑life examples of when symptoms show up (and when things go well)
- Questions you’d like answered
Parents or caregivers: jot down specific situations that show your child’s strengths and struggles. We are looking for an honest picture of everyday life. If you need breaks, a slower pace, or a support person, let us know. We’re here to make this comfortable and accessible.
