What is PTSD and how can therapy help?
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) develops in trauma survivors, showing up as distressing memories and involuntary physiological responses that start to overshadow and disrupt daily life, leaving you feeling unsafe in your world.
In therapy, we use evidence-based therapies like Cognitive-Processing Therapy, EMDR, Prolonged Exposure, Narrative Therapy and Exposure Therapy, Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) to help you gradually reduce the impact of trauma, manage symptoms, and regain control of your life.

Questions About PTSD
Does therapy help?
Yes, therapy can be really helpful. The right kind of therapy, like Cognitive-Processing Therapy, EMDR, Prolonged Exposure, Narrative Therapy and Exposure Therapy, Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), can make a big difference. It’s like having a guide who knows how to help you with the tough stuff you’re going through.
Will I have to attend therapy forever?
You can stay as long as you need. At first, it’s a good idea to go to therapy regularly so we can work on making you feel safe and stable. Once you start feeling better and things are improving in your life, like your relationships or work, we can adjust the plan. It’s encouraged to continue with therapy in the long term, but you may need fewer appointments. This way, you can always reach out for support when you need it.
How do I know if I have PTSD or just workplace stress?
This can be a bit tricky, but we can figure it out together. We’ll look at the specific signs and symptoms that are needed for a PTSD diagnosis. It can also be helpful to meet with a specialist like a family doctor, psychiatrist, or psychologist who can officially diagnose you and, if necessary, provide medications. Sharing their assessments with your therapist can help us create the best treatment plan for you.
What are the symptoms/criteria of PTSD?
To be diagnosed with PTSD, you need to meet certain criteria, which are like a checklist of symptoms. It includes things like having distressing memories, nightmares, and being really on edge. We’ll go through these criteria to see if they apply to you, and if they do, we can work on getting you the right help and support.
Please note that we do not provide diagnoses for PTSD. Determining if someone is experiencing symptoms of PTSD requires a comprehensive evaluation by a qualified healthcare professional, such as a family doctor, psychiatrist, or psychologist. If you do not have a pre-existing diagnosis, we will refer you to a family doctor, psychiatrist, or psychologist.
How do I know if therapy is working?
The biggest indicator of whether therapy is working is how you feel within yourself. The timeline and rate of improvement will be different for everybody, but here are some indicators that you are seeing progress:
- You find it easier to function in daily life
- You notice that you aren’t triggered as easily
- You don’t have as many physical symptoms
- You are falling asleep faster and having a more restful night
One of the biggest indicators that therapy is working is if you start to engage wholeheartedly in life, finding joy in activities and relationships again.
How long will it take for me to feel better?
This is dependent on each person and on how many exposures you have had to traumatic events over your career or lifetime. You will develop the treatment plan with your provider for how frequently you wish to meet them and what the treatment will include. It is helpful to create realistic expectations for yourself and the therapy and know this is an ongoing process. You may notice times when you feel better and times when you feel worse as you be and flow to work towards recovery. Many people find that taking the first step toward recovery by starting therapy brings a sense of immediate relief because you know that you no longer have to carry this burden alone, and are being supported in a safe, non-judgmental way.
