Somatic Therapy

If you’ve been feeling anxious, tense, or stuck in old patterns, somatic therapy offers a mind–body approach that takes into account your thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations. It’s a holistic way of healing that helps you connect with yourself on every level, not just in your mind.

When your body and mind are carrying more than you can hold

Most of us are used to pushing through; caring for everyone else, holding it all together, ignoring the quiet (or not-so-quiet) signals from our body that something isn’t right. But eventually, those signals become harder to ignore: the tightness in your chest, the racing thoughts at night, the feeling of being “on edge” or “not yourself.”

Somatic therapy gives you a safe place to uncover and gently release what’s been stored inside.

MINDFUL PATH COUNSELLING

Why Somatic Therapy?

Have you noticed yourself clenching your jaw without realizing it, or feeling your chest tighten when you open your inbox? These small moments are your body’s way of letting you know it’s under strain, but most of us are so caught up in our thoughts that we hardly notice what’s happening beneath the surface.

The truth is, your body remembers. Even when your mind tells you to “move on,” unresolved stress and trauma can stay lodged in your nervous system. It often shows up as anxiety or OCD loops, chronic fatigue, muscle tension, sleepless nights, or that unsettled feeling of never being fully at ease.

When we go through overwhelming experiences, our nervous system can get stuck in survival responses like fight, flight, freeze, or fawn. These patterns can show up long after the original stress or trauma has passed, leaving you anxious, exhausted, or disconnected. Somatic therapy helps you gently release these patterns and return to a sense of safety.

Most traditional therapies work from the “top down”, where they start with your thoughts and help you make sense of them. Somatic therapy takes a different path. It uses a “bottom up” approach, paying attention to your body’s sensations and signals, which often hold the deepest clues to what’s really going on. By listening to your body in this way, you can get to the root of your struggles, rather than just managing the symptoms.

Unlike talk therapy, which focuses primarily on processing through words and thoughts, somatic therapy helps you tune into the body’s wisdom. Many people who feel stuck after years of talk therapy find relief in this different approach, because it reaches the places words can’t always go.

Through practices like mindfulness, breathwork, and body awareness, somatic therapy helps you slow down, notice what your body has been carrying, and gently release it. You don’t have to rehash every painful detail of the past.

Healing can unfold in the present moment, through the safety and wisdom of your own body.

What can somatic therapy help with?

Living with trauma can feel like you’re always bracing for something bad to happen, even when you’re safe. Somatic therapy helps calm your nervous system, ease the intensity of flashbacks and overwhelm, and remind your body what it feels like to truly rest.
When worry takes over, your body feels it too, with symptoms such as racing thoughts, a tight chest, and restless energy. Somatic therapy helps you tune in to those signals, gently release the tension, and find a steadier sense of calm.
Sometimes it’s not about feeling “too much,” but about feeling nothing at all. If you’re moving through life disconnected, heavy, or stuck in a fog, Somatic therapy offers a way to slowly reconnect with yourself, your body, and the parts of life that bring light back in.
Early hurts or broken trust can make it hard to feel safe with others. Somatic therapy helps you rebuild that sense of safety from the inside out, so you can nurture healthier, more secure relationships.
Do you often feel far away from yourself, like you’re watching life from the outside? Somatic therapy helps you come home to your body in a gentle, grounding way.
When life keeps asking more of you than your body can give, exhaustion sets in. Somatic therapy helps you reset your nervous system, release tension, and replenish your energy so you can feel balanced again.
Grief doesn’t just live in your heart; it often settles in your body too. Somatic therapy creates space for those heavy emotions to move through you, so you can carry your loss with gentleness rather than being weighed down by it.
That inner voice that says “I’m broken” or “this is my fault” can feel overwhelming. Somatic therapy helps shift those painful beliefs by reconnecting you to your inherent worth and reminding you that you are enough, just as you are.

Questions About Somatic Therapy

Somatic therapy is a body-centered approach that looks at how trauma, stress, and emotions are stored in the body, not just the mind. While traditional talk therapy focuses mainly on thoughts and storytelling, Somatic Therapy works from the “bottom up”, using tools like body awareness, breathwork, gentle movement, and nervous system regulation to support healing at a deeper, physiological level

Our bodies carry memories and tension long after our minds have tried to move on. You may notice this as tightness, numbness, or restlessness without fully understanding why. Somatic therapy helps you tune in to those sensations, which often hold unprocessed emotions. By noticing and gently releasing what your body has been holding, you can experience more regulation, emotional relief, and a deeper sense of healing than thinking alone can provide.

Healing looks different for everyone: children, teens, and adults alike. The pace depends on what you’re moving through and what support you need along the way. Some people notice shifts within a few months, while others, especially those healing from complex somatic issues, may need longer-term support. At Mindful Path Counselling, we focus on more than just symptom relief. Our goal is to help you feel safer in your body, more emotionally regulated, and more connected to who you really are.

Not at all. One of the strengths of somatic therapy is that it doesn’t require you to revisit every detail of the past. Instead, the focus is on what’s happening in your body and nervous system right now. Often, less talking allows more space for healing, helping trauma to release without the risk of re-traumatization.

Yes. There is growing research supporting somatic approaches, especially for trauma. Modalities like Somatic Experiencing, Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, and Polyvagal-informed therapy are backed by neuroscience and trauma studies. Many people find significant relief from anxiety, PTSD symptoms, chronic stress, and even physical pain through somatic work, sometimes after other therapies haven’t helped.

What life can look like after somatic therapy

Healing through the body is never a straight line. Instead, it unfolds slowly, in layers, at your own pace. With the right support, small shifts begin to build into lasting change. Over time, you may notice that you:

“Our true nature is wholeness. Healing simply clears the dust from the mirror so we can see ourselves clearly again.”
