When the weight of the past is still heavy today

For many Indigenous people, the challenges of daily life are layered with deeper histories of loss, racism, and disconnection. Even when everything looks “normal” on the outside, the impact can show up in painful ways; through anxiety, depression, panic attacks, grief, substance use disorders, interpersonal violence, lateral violence, strained family dynamics, or the loneliness of feeling caught between worlds. It’s a lot to carry, especially when safe, culturally informed support feels out of reach.

At Mindful Path Counselling, we hold space for all of that. Your story matters, your spirit matters, and your healing deserves to be seen and honoured.

Therapy for Indigenous People

Why Therapy for Indigenous People?

Culturally safe therapy means you don’t have to explain or defend your identity. You deserve care where your story is honoured, your culture is respected, and your healing is supported without judgment or stereotypes. At Mindful Path Counselling, we listen deeply and walk alongside you as you bring your traditions and spirituality into the process.

Therapy can be a space to explore your emotions, build coping strategies, and strengthen your sense of identity. For many, it also means reconnecting with traditional practices such as ceremony, smudging, drumming, sweat lodges, or land-based healing and weaving them together with Western approaches when that feels right for you.

Healing here isn’t about fitting into one system. It is about creating a path that feels authentic, respectful, and true to who you are.

How does therapy for Indigenous People help?

Therapy for Indigenous People provides space to process the pain passed down through families and communities, helping you break cycles while honouring your ancestors and their resilience.
Struggles with low mood, panic, or feeling constantly on edge can be heavy to carry. Therapy for Indigenous People offers tools to regulate your emotions and reclaim a sense of balance, leading to emotional wellness and wholistic living.
Healing often means coming back to language, ceremony, and traditions. Therapy can support you in exploring and strengthening your cultural identity as part of your emotional and spiritual wellness.
Facing systemic racism and stereotyping can leave deep wounds. Therapy for Indigenous People offers a safe place to talk through these experiences and build resilience.
Displacement or feeling caught between two worlds can be alienating. Therapy for Indigenous People provides connection and validation so you don’t have to carry that loneliness alone.
Whether it’s the loss of loved ones, land, or cultural ties, therapy helps you honour your grief and find pathways to healing.
It’s common to internalize harmful messages or feel at fault for struggles. Therapy for Indigenous People can help shift those beliefs and foster self-compassion.
Wellness in Indigenous communities is relational. Therapy can support you in building trust, setting healthy boundaries, and nurturing meaningful connections.

How Therapy for Indigenous People Works

More than holistic health, we offer Wholistic Health

Your story matters. We begin by listening with care and respect, learning about your journey, your strengths, and the impact of intergenerational trauma, racism, and life experiences.

Your healing path is unique. Some people want to focus on emotions and coping strategies, while others may choose to integrate cultural or spiritual practices like ceremony, smudging, or land-based healing. Together, we design a plan that feels true to you.

Healing takes time and trust. Our role is to provide support, resources, and guidance to help you feel more grounded, connected, and balanced in your life.

We invite you to stay as long as you need.

Questions About Therapy for Indigenous People

This is a deeply emotional and urgent question that speaks to intergenerational trauma, residential school legacies, substance use, violence, and colonialism. Healing is not only personal. It is also collective, cultural, and often spiritual.

Many Indigenous people fear being misunderstood, judged, or having to explain their identity or trauma to a non-Indigenous provider. At Mindful Path Counselling, all interns and providers are required to complete the Indigenous Canada course through the University of Alberta as a minimum standard. Some of our therapists have more extensive experience, and you are always welcome to ask about this when booking.

Trust can feel fragile, especially for those impacted by residential schools, foster care, displacement, or colonial violence. Understandably, many worry about being re-traumatized, dismissed, or having their words used against them in systems such as child welfare or the courts. Our therapists are trained to hold space for sensitive and painful experiences with care. Therapy is always about you, and our providers have supports in place, such as clinical supervision or consultation with Elders to ensure safety and respect.
Yes, and we encourage you to. Many Indigenous people wish to bring traditional knowledge, ceremonies, and spiritual practices into their healing, but fear this may be dismissed. At Mindful Path Counselling, we welcome and respect these practices as an important part of your wellbeing.
Therapy with us is not about forcing you into a one-size-fits-all system. We offer care from a wholistic, person-centred, and culturally sound perspective. Every individual, youth, family, or community member we meet is seen as unique, and we tailor our approach to honour your identity, needs, and goals.
No — we take care of all billing for you. At Mindful Path Counselling, we handle payments directly through NIHB (Non-Insured Health Benefits) and Jordan’s Principle, so you don’t have to worry about the process. In addition, Crystal, our Nurse Practitioner, can bill assessments directly through Jordan’s Principle.
