Let’s take a moment to reflect on the past and coming month:

1. Did your mental health change in May? (Think about what could be causing this change)

2. Did you reach out for support when needed? (If you did think about what you appreciated about that support, if you didn’t what stopped you?)

3. How will your self-care change for June? (Think about what worked and didn’t work in May, what will change?)

4. What is something you are proud of from May? (It could be something you learned, something you did, something you now know about yourself, a goal you reached, progress you made, etc.)

5. What are you expecting will be challenging next month? (And how can you prepare to give yourself increased support and compassion?)

Working to improve your sleep can improve your mental health! Here’s how:

💭Sleep recharges and restores. Sleep is the time your brain uses to regenerate, repair, process information, and prepare of the next day.
💭 Lack of sleep increases risk of mood swings, irritability, and stress.
💭Lack of sleep decreases cognitive function by making reducing attention, memory, decision making, focus, and information processing.
💭Adequate and restful sleep can improve your mood, boost creativity, and improve your problem-solving abilities.

Here is how to create a sleep schedule (and improve your sleep hygiene)
🛌Set a regular bedtime (and stick to it)
🛌Wake up at the same time every day (including weekends, this helps to regulate your internal clock)
🛌Make gradual adjustments (if you need to make changes and have the time to do it, try shifting in 15 minute increments to allow your body to adjust)
🛌 Avoid oversleeping (catching up on sleep is tempting but it can disrupt your overall routine)
🛌Consider tracking how you feel after different amounts of sleep to find your optimal range (recommended 7-9 hours)
🛌 Be consistent (the key to any habit is consistency, even on weekends and vacation)
🛌Create a bedtime routine (a pre-sleep ritual that is consistent every night, aim to include things that relax you. Whatever you choose try to create some consistency and make sure it is something that is calming)
🛌 Ensure your sleep environment is relaxing/comfortable.

Working to improve your communication can be difficult, here are some starting tips!

5 ways you can work to improve your communication:

1) Express and Correct
If you’re giving someone some constructive criticism, make sure you include a ‘request for change’. In other words, tell them what they can do instead, what you need, what needs to change in order for you to get what you need.

2) Use Reflective Responses
Reflect back the content, emotions, and underlying meaning of what the other person said. This draws on skills of empathy and lets the other person know you are listening and are trying to understand what they are saying.

3) Plan Conversations
Make sure the other person is ready and available to have a conversation with you, particularly if it is about a difficult topic. Check in with them to see if they are open to have a discussion and be mindful of contextual factors that may be drawing their attention, capacity, and openness to engage in an emotionally open conversation.

4) Be Curious
Ask follow up questions and make guesses as to why something feels significant to that person; and then allow yourself to be corrected (don’t assume you know everything about them). Practice checking in with that person to explore with them whether you have fully understood their perspective.

5) Use ‘I’ statements
Express what you need by using ‘I’ statements to convey what your experience is and what you need. This helps to reduce the amount of criticism the other person feels and helps make what you need clearer to the other person.

Psychologist Abraham Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs can be used to highlight to different components present in self-care and well-being. In order to move to the next level, the previous level needs to be satisfied. Improving your mental health involves ensuring you are well in a variety of domains:

1️⃣ Physiological Needs:
At the base are our fundamental physiological needs like food, water, shelter, and sleep. Addressing these needs is crucial for maintaining our physical and mental well-being. Without fulfilling these needs, it's difficult to focus on higher-level needs.

2️⃣ Safety Needs:
Safety needs include personal and financial security, a stable environment, and protection from harm. Feeling safe allows us to experience a sense of calm and focus.

3️⃣ Love and Belonging:
As social beings, we have a deep need for love, affection, and a sense of belonging. We strive to build meaningful relationships, to be part of a community, and experience love and acceptance.

4️⃣ Esteem Needs:
Esteem needs refer to the desire for self-respect, recognition, and a sense of accomplishment. We seek to develop self-esteem and gain recognition from others.

5️⃣ Self-fulfillment:
The pinnacle of the pyramid represents self-actualization, the need to fulfill our potential and achieve personal growth. This involves pursuing our passions, realizing our talents, and finding fulfillment in life.

When we consistently prioritize the happiness of others, we are often doing so at our own expense. This risks us losing sight of our own true selves, our needs, and our feelings. It’s necessary to find a balance between prioritizing others and prioritizing yourself.

Here are some tips for setting (and maintaining) boundaries:

1. Reflect on your needs and values.
- Identify what is important to you in life and relationships and what your goals and needs are. Reorient yourself to check in with your comfort level first before considering what others need.

2. Communicatee openly and assertively
- Once you have identified what you are comfortable with, let others know what you need from them. Setting boundaries can be saying no, asking someone to change their behaviour, limiting or controlling your involvement in an activity/event, etc. This can be really difficult and scary, seek support as needed!

3. Be consistent
- Setting boundaries often requires those around you, or yourself, to change. This takes time and repeated learning. When you get ready to set a boundary get ready to reinforce it and expect it to not be perfect at first.

4. Be ready for pushback
- Remember that just because your boundary seems to conflict with the needs and feelings of others, that doesn’t mean that your boundary is wrong. You have needs and feelings backing up your own boundary. An important part of any relationships is finding a balance between everyone involved.
