Signs You Might Benefit from Individual Therapy

A blog by Julie Moore

Individual therapy offers a safe, non-judgemental space where you and your therapist can explore your personal challenges, emotional struggles, and/or mental health concerns. Through personalized one-to-one sessions, your therapist will provide valuable insight into strategies and tools to help you restore balance and harmony in your life.

But how do you know if it’s the right time to seek therapy? Below are some areas that individual therapy can provide support:

1. Struggle to Express Emotions

It can be challenging to express emotions clearly in a way that others around you can understand. Other times, you may bottle up emotions to avoid conflict and be left feeling overwhelmed inside. Therapy can help you build your communication skills to express feelings effectively and avoid emotional build-up.

2. Negative Thoughts and/or Extreme Emotions

Persistent negative self-talk and/or intrusive thoughts can be challenging to manage, leaving you feeling frustrated, anxious, or depressed. Therapy can help reframe your thought patterns and encourage more positive thoughts instead.

3. Grief

The loss of a loved one can experience grief. It can also stem from losing anything or anyone we once had a deep connection with, such as a home, a pet, a job, etc. Grief can lead to feelings of sadness, anger, shame, regret, anxiety, and more. Therapy can help you navigate your thoughts and feelings through this difficult time.

4. Significant Life Transitions

Significant life transitions—like moving to a new place, starting a new job, becoming a parent, or experiencing loss—can be challenging to navigate independently. Therapy can help break down these stressors into smaller, more manageable steps to help process this stress.

5. Trauma

Unresolved trauma, whether it be from your childhood or later in life, can impact your overall health and well-being, hindering your ability to heal and move forward. Therapy can help you process this unresolved trauma.

6. Sexuality

You may struggle to understand and process sexual feelings, thoughts, attractions, and behaviours towards others. Therapy can offer a space to explore these aspects of your identity without judgment.

7. Managing Relationship Difficulties

Relationship conflict can challenge your personal boundaries and connections, whether family, friends, work or with a partner. Therapy can help you manage and navigate these dynamics.

8. Feeling Stuck

Life can feel overwhelming and confusing at times, making it challenging to navigate while juggling multiple responsibilities in your day-to-day life, such as work, family, personal health, finances, and so on. Therapy can help you navigate the emotional and mental thoughts from these transitions.

9. Destructive Behaviours

Destructive behaviours are any behaviours that cause emotional and/or physical harm to yourself and can include binge eating, substance abuse, self-injury, self-isolation, compulsive gambling, etc. Therapy will help you understand why you engage in destructive behaviours and develop healthier behaviours

10. Lack of Motivation

You may feel disconnected from the things that used to bring you joy, passion, and excitement. Therapy can help you reconnect with these things and experience a sense of fulfillment again.

Did you know individual therapy is available for children and youth (ages 4+)? Like adults, children and youth can benefit from individual therapy for help with processing day-to-day stressors such as homework or bullying, processing big emotions that are difficult to understand, managing anxiety, and more.
