Private Insurance & Extended Health Insurance Coverage
If you have private health insurance we recommend you contact your insurance provider before your first appointment. You can also check your extended plan to see if there is any mention of counselling being covered by an RSW (Registered Social Worker), by a professional who holds a Master of Social Work degree (MSW), or by a Registered Psychotherapist (RP) who holds a Master of Counselling Psychology degree (MACP).
Your insurance company might ask for verification that a social worker is registered with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSSSW) and/or a psychotherapist is registered with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO) which is information that can be located http://www.ocswssw.org/members/online-register/ or http://www.crpo.ca.

FAQS & Other Resources
Why should I speak to a therapist instead of a friend?
Speaking to a therapist rather than a friend offers several advantages. Therapists are trained professionals who bring extra benefits to the conversation, including expertise in mental health and effective therapeutic techniques. We offer objectivity and maintain strict confidentiality, ensuring that your personal information remains secure. It’s our job and passion to prioritize your well-being, and we focus on providing a welcoming space where you can express yourself openly without fear of judgment.
How do I know when its time to speak to a therapist?
You can come to therapy anytime; you don’t need to wait until there’s a big issue. Sometimes it’s just nice to offload and share what’s going on in your life with a neutral person! If you are dealing with:
- Not feeling like yourself
- A change in your thoughts, patterns, emotions, and behaviours
- Big life changes, events, or transitions
- Challenges and/or suffering in your relationship(s)
- A loss of interest in hobbies or things that you used to find joy in before
We will sit with you, listen, and offer guidance to help you sort through it.
How do I know if my therapist is a good fit?
We offer a free 15-minute consultation call with up to two providers so you have the opportunity to connect, ask questions, and determine if the provider you selected is a good fit based on your needs. Signs if it’s a good fit: you feel comfortable speaking openly with the provider, your sessions are productive, they provide you with constructive and helpful feedback, and you feel motivated to attend your therapy appointments.
How do I prepare for my first session?
For the first session you need to complete all intake paperwork. Sometimes it can be helpful to bring a pen and paper to your appointment to take notes, and be prepared to be asked a lot of questions, explore your thoughts, needs, and emotions. It can be helpful to write down specific topics or themes you wish to discuss in the appointment. Keep an open mind!
For phone appointments or virtual video appointments, make sure your phone, tablet, or laptop is in good working condition. Check that your camera and microphone are functioning properly. Install any necessary software or updates in advance. Choose a confidential and quiet space for the session and make sure your device is charged to prevent disruptions.
Will my therapy session by confidential?
Clients have a right to privacy, and one of the perks of going to therapy is that what they share with their therapist stays with the therapist. This means that we do not share your personal information or details of our sessions with anyone else, and any documentation related to our work together is stored in a secure online platform.
However, as therapists, we do have certain limitations, with the following exceptions, we would not be able to ensure confidentiality:
- If you present a risk of physical harm to yourself or others, we are obligated to notify the appropriate parties.
- If there is a suspected case of child neglect or abuse, we have a duty to report to Family and Children’s Services.
- If clinical records are subpoenaed through a court order.
- If a presenting issue is beyond our scope of practice, we may seek clinical supervision/consultation. However, in this instance, your personal information would remain anonymous as we would continue to ensure your privacy.
- To report misconduct of a professional within our own governing body.
**Please note that in all instances, we will do our very best to have a conversation with you about our concerns before any action is taken.
How do I close my file with you? When will my file be closed?
It is sad sometimes but counselling does come to an end. While your file may be closed because you have met your counselling goals and have determined that you no longer require services, there are other reasons for file closure, as well.
Outstanding Payment
If we have not received payment for a session, we may close a client’s file and discontinue services. This file can be reopened and services can continue upon receipt of payment.
Lack of Contact
As we often have a waitlist, we want to ensure that clients are able to access services in a timely fashion. Therefore, if we have not heard from you in one (1) month, we will close your file. You are welcome to reconnect and request services again; however, we cannot guarantee availability and you may be placed on a waitlist.
Inconsistent Attendance
Counselling is a commitment to both yourself and your Social Worker/Psychotherapist. This means that consistency is important to achieving the goals that you are working towards. Therefore, if there are frequent cancellations or “no shows,” it may be an indicator that it is not the right time to pursue counselling.
Client Records
We will ensure that each client record is stored and preserved in a secure location for at least seven (7) years from the date of the last entry or, if the client was less than eighteen years of age at the date of the last entry, at least seven years from the day the client became or would have become eighteen. These regulations are in line with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW) and we are required by law to abide by them.
