Every relationship is a work in progress
Starting a family, increased responsibilities and career changes can take their toll on your relationship. As our lives evolve, it only makes sense that our relationship does too!
What sets apart a successful partnership from a struggling one, is the willingness of both parties to work on it continuously. No relationship is perfect, but with dedication, love, and respect, it can be a source of happiness and fulfillment.
"A great marriage is not when the ‘perfect couple’ comes together. It is when an imperfect couple learns to enjoy their differences."
- Dave Meurer
MINDFUL PATH COUNSELLING
Why Couples Counselling?
Couples counselling is for people who care deeply about their partner and want to work to resolve the issues that are driving a wedge between them.
When you are arguing or trying to work through a challenge as a couple, it can be difficult to communicate what you’re really looking for while understanding what it is that your partner needs. Often, each person in the relationship is looking for similar needs to be met—to feel appreciated, supported, loved, and heard—but they communicate it to each other in different ways.
In therapy, we can help you find common ground so you can reconnect. Our cozy atmosphere helps both partners feel comfortable, and our therapists allow space for each of you to speak your mind freely. By thoughtfully listening to each side, we can help identify areas of tension and offer gentle guidance to address the issues and communicate in a way that helps you both feel respected and heard.
What can couples counselling help with?
Improved Communication
Effective communication is the cornerstone of a healthy relationship. Being able to express your needs, desires, and concerns in a respectful and effective way can help each partner feel loved and supported. Too often, misunderstandings arise from how things are said and interpreted, rather than the content of the message. In therapy, we can help you express your needs and wants to each other in a respectful and loving way.
Building a Stronger Bond
Reigniting Intimacy
The old saying “foreplay begins in the kitchen” is very true. But the kitchen, work, and other responsibilities can also be the things that drive a wedge between two partners. Life gets busy and sometimes the spark that first brought out together starts to fade. In therapy, we look at ways to not only bring that excitement back, but to nurture it and create a deeper, more meaningful level of intimacy—in every area of your life.
Navigating Life Transitions
Job transitions, moving, starting a family—they are all a part of an exciting life. However, they can also put a strain on your relationship. It’s easy to feel a bit lost or out of step with each other when everything’s changing. In therapy, we look at ways to handle these big moments together, focusing on talking openly, supporting each other, and adapting as a team. By facing these changes together, it’s possible to not only get through them, but also grow closer and strengthen your bond in the process.
Parenting as a Team
Overcoming Challenges
Peacefully Ending Your Relationship
While couples therapy aims to deepen your connection as a couple, sometimes you know that it’s time for the relationship to come to an end. The end doesn’t always have to be bitter or full of conflict. In therapy, we work on ways to part amicably, respecting and valuing the time you spent together while focusing on communication strategies that allow for a peaceful and respectful closure.

Questions About Couples Counselling
Do we attend therapy together?
During couples counselling, you will usually spend most therapy sessions together. We often hear from our couples that they feel like they have tried everything to improve their relationship–books, advice from friends, talking things through—but nothing seemed to work. Attending couples counselling is different. In sessions, we offer a place for both partners to speak without fear. By thoughtfully listening to each side, we can help identify areas of tension and offer gentle guidance to address the issues bringing you to therapy.
We offer in-person couples counselling in Brantford, Kitchener, Simcoe, and Toronto, and virtual couples counselling across Ontario, British Columbia, and Newfoundland and Labrador.
Do we also get individual therapy?
There are two situations in which you can come to individual therapy for relationship challenges:
- Your partner isn’t ready to come to couples therapy, but you would like to do what you can to improve the relationship by focusing on your areas of growth.
- You are attending couples therapy together, but there are some areas that you would like advice on alone before presenting it to your partner.
Individual sessions can help you develop the skills to create a closer connection with your partner. By focusing on your mental health and developing a healthier relationship with yourself, the benefits can spill over into your relationship.
Here’s how it works: When you reach out for Couples Therapy, we will start off with a Couples Intake Appointment involving both individuals. The second and third appointments will be individual sessions, followed by the fourth appointment for a feedback assessment. After this is the ongoing couples therapy, where we work together to strengthen your relationship.
Does therapy help?
Yes, therapy can make a big difference in your relationship as you learn more effective ways to talk to and understand each other. More than that, we walk you through actionable steps you can start using right away to improve your relationship.
That being said, there are a few instances where couples counselling may not be helpful in restoring your relationship, such as: when one partner has already decided they are leaving, when there are secrets that one partner is unwilling to talk about, or when domestic violence is present in the relationship. In these cases, we can advise you as a mediator, but for restoration and healing, both partners need to be committed the process.
How do we know if therapy is working?
In therapy, we equip you with practical skills that you can introduce into your relationship immediately, and because of this, you may notice improvements within a few weeks. Meaningful, lasting change takes time and patience as trust is rebuilt and new patterns are established. With consistency and commitment, you’ll notice that over time, you feel more affectionate toward each other. You’re arguing less, and when you do, you are able to resolve the conflict with a solution that works for both of you. You forgive each other faster, and start to enjoy each other’s company more than you did before.
Will you tell us when we need to stop?
You can always decide together when it’s time to stop, and we can help you make the transition when you do. Every couple’s journey is unique, and the decision to end therapy should be made collaboratively and thoughtfully. When you are ready to move on from therapy, we will make sure that you feel equipped with the tools and strategies to manage future challenges.
